    Formation

The Masonic Foundation is a non-profit corporation with philanthropic objectives. It was founded in 1964 when Walter K. Stinson, a Past Master, bequeathed his estate to the Fraternity for charitable purposes, firmly establishing the capital fund. The capital of the fund has continued to grow since that time through the generous donations of individuals, lodges and districts.

    Objectives

    - Benevolence at large in the Province of Quebec, outside our Fraternity's membership,

    - Equipment for hospitals and research centres in the Province of Quebec,

    - Aid to education - through bursaries, etc,

    - Aid to religion - through bursaries etc,

    - To provide accommodation to Lodges, Chapters, etc., whose role it is through ritual and practise, to teach the virtues and improve the mind, thus creating nobility of character in all of its members.

Various Methods to Make a Contribution to the Foundation

    1. A gift to the Foundation - Contributions are thankfully received to be added to the capital fund of the Foundation. The interest on these gifts will be donated to charities through future years. A tax receipt will be issued to all donors.

    2. A gift through the Foundation to your favourite charitable cause - rather than send gifts directly to your charity, please consider channelling through the Masonic Foundation. The Foundation forwards these donations to any charity which you designate and sends you a tax receipt for the like amount. Consequently you and the Foundation benefit from your charitable act.

If the donation is from a Masonic body, such as a Lodge or District, a request from the donor for the Foundation to match the donation may be made at the same time. Such requests are not automatic. Within the terms of reference and considering the availability of funds, the Foundation endeavours to satisfy matching requests. Please make matching requests in care of, Secretary, Charities Committee, Masonic Foundation of Quebec.

    3. Future contributions - Many individuals make provisions to remember the organization which has played an important part in their lives as a final gesture:

    a) Funeral donations - instead of flowers, a lasting gift can be made to the Foundation in the name of the deceased.

    b) Life insurance - naming the Foundation as beneficiary to a life insurance policy can result in a substantial gift. The modest insurance premiums are tax deductible. Many individuals use this means of donation rather than annual donations.

    c) Legacies - we take nothing with us when we leave this earth. A gift to the Foundation designated in your Will continues the basic virtue, charity, which you adhered to in the Masonic movement.

    Contributions

The Foundation has made generous contributions to the advancement of education, especially providing scholarships for professional training for teachers eager to improve the lives of mentally retarded and emotionally disturbed children. The Foundation has contributed to the advancement of religious activities by making donations to various organizations: The Montreal Theological College, the Diocesan Priesthood Guild of Montreal, the Presbyterian College of Montreal, the Rabbinical College of Canada and the Salvation Army. The McGill Auditory Unit, the MacKay centre and the Gaspé literacy project have also been financially supported.

Our Foundation has contributed to the relief of poverty by supporting a large number of organizations: the Welcome Hall Mission, Tyndale St. George Church; the Old Brewery Mission; the Benedict Labre House, the West Island Women's Shelter; the Montreal Association for the Mentally Retarded, the Montreal Association for the Blind, the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Quebec Association for Children with Learning Disabilities.

Thanks to our Foundation, many institutions have been provided with essential equipment. Here are a few examples: Douglas Memorial Hospital - patient lifts; St. Mary's Hospital - treadmill stress testing equipment; Clinical Research Institute of Montreal - microscope; Montreal Children's Hospital - X-Ray equipment; Montreal General Hospital - Atomic absorption spectrophotometer; Radiation leakage detector; Queen Elizabeth Hospital - Anaesthetic ingestor; Sherbrooke Hospital - Electro-coagulator; Montreal Chinese Hospital - Coulter counter haematology unit; Brome-Missoquoi Hospital - knee surgery equipment.

On occasion, the Foundation has also supported Masonic Cultural activities with grants to the Masonic Choir, the Mozart music festival and other concerts for masons.

The type and scope of activities our Foundation has been involved with to date clearly indicate the many and varied needs of our community and the ability and willingness of the Foundation to meet these requirements. The needs which will arise in future years cannot be anticipated. However, it is certain that the accelerating rate of change in society will continue and leave in its wake new challenges for our Foundation to accept.

For your convenience, the enclosed form is provided, which may accompany your donation. You simply need to copy and paste it in your word processor. If you require further information, the Foundation will be happy to assist you. Call 514-933-6452.
